Antagonists
Morvaeth

- Name
- Morvaeth “the Dwarfslayer”
- Kind
- Elf — ancient (over 1000 years since the defeat over Althaea; age comparable to Ammetharion)
- Origin of the Byname
- Title + decorations from the last great war against the dwarves — was cruel and merciless
- Council Position
- Deputy to the Council Chairman — took Ammetharion's place after maneuvering him out
- Element
- Shadow / Darkness — extinguishes the other elements (Ice/Fire/Earth/Star) instead of complementing them
- Dragon
- Nyxareth — shadow dragon, female (gender principle: he male → dragon female). Direct counterpole to Elvireth: Star Queen/light against a shadow queen who swallows light.
- Bond
- Dragon-bound — knows the bond's weakness so precisely because he is bound himself; used this knowledge to break Althaea's bond
Companion & Equipment
Role
The TRUE antagonist behind Velyra.
- Velyra = the blade: executes, blood-potion motive, visible antagonist
- Morvaeth = the hand: plans, insider knowledge, Council cover, hidden mastermind
- Velyra alone could NEVER win against dragon-bound Sternenfall elves + Ammetharion — only Morvaeth's power/knowledge makes the family vulnerable. He is the necessary condition.
Motive (Chain)
- Origin (over 1000 years): Was against the marriage of Ammetharion × Althaea — wanted Althaea for HIMSELF (comrade-in-arms, love/obsession). Lost to Ammetharion and never accepted it.
- The Trap: Commissioned Velyra (long-standing contractor) to eliminate Ammetharion — clear the rival out of the way, open the path to Althaea. Althaea's death was NOT the plan. Velyra killed her instead of him.
- After the Accident: Possessive love + guilt tipped into radical hatred + guilt deflection. He projects the guilt onto Ammetharion: “he let her die for him.” Believes his own lie. → Most dangerous type of antagonist: convinced of his own innocence.
- Hunt for the Daughters (Mixture): (a) the daughters are Ammetharion's continuation and happiness — to be extinguished; (b) they are the living reproach of his own guilt, whose erasure removes his failure from the world.
- The Letter: Possesses Althaea's last letter to Ammetharion (she died for him, carried his son) — can neither destroy it (all that remained of her) nor let it go. Relic of his obsession + proof of his defeat.
- NO blood-potion motive — he is an elf, gains nothing from the potion. Purely personal/guilt-deflecting → colder and sicker than Velyra. Symbiosis: she wants blood, he wants self-absolution through annihilation.
The Miscalculation (Heart of the Character)
- The plan was: Eliminate Ammetharion → open the path to Althaea.
- What went wrong: Velyra killed Althaea instead of Ammetharion. With that, everything was lost — and through his guilt-deflecting projection, Morvaeth created an Ammetharion who blames himself and isolates the daughters at the castle.
- Second miscalculation: Ammetharion did NOT break under the implanted self-doubt. He isolated the daughters protectively — the self-reproach did not paralyze him, it sharpened his protective instinct. The 300 years of a safe castle = unintended consequence of Morvaeth's manipulation.
- Hence blocked for 300 years — until the war front breaks the isolation (= the game's starting point). His plan is starting up again NOW.
- Ironic twist: Morvaeth's work (accident + projection) made the family stronger, not weaker. The pain became protection. And the letter in his possession proves his own guilt every single day.
Cover & Character
- Legitimate, decorated war hero (Dwarf War) → in elven eyes his authority is EARNED, not obtained by deceit.
- Perfectly composed, dignified, seemingly reasonable — the opposite of an obvious villain. Everyone trusts him because he embodies calm + authority. The coldness behind it only becomes visible in the reveal.
- Ammetharion's dark mirror: What the father would have become had he not withstood the defeat over Althaea, but been eaten away by it.
Network (Paid Lackeys)
Morvaeth carries out his dirty work through paid lackeys — keeps his own fingerprint small, hands seemingly clean.
- Cover-up Example / Key Canon: Through his network, Morvaeth ordered the elven guards to ride off (true fact) — AFTERWARDS had them eliminated as potential witnesses and their bodies placed far away. The resulting rumor of flight is founded on the true fact (the ride-off) and is therefore unassailable. No one outside his network knows the truth.
- Double-edged: The network serves Morvaeth — but it is the ONLY place where the MC + sisters can obtain information. Handled right (a turned/captured lackey, infiltration), it can be used AGAINST him → investigation layer in the midgame + the way the truth comes to light. Access to the letter = via this route (the servant who intercepted the letter is on Morvaeth's list).
Relationship with Velyra
Velyra was Morvaeth's long-standing contractor — not an ally from the beginning, but a resource he built up over time:
- Gathering information outside the elven lands
- Eliminations and capturing fugitives
- Amplifying his magic through forbidden runes/seals — explains his finale combat strength on equal footing (as a legitimate Council representative he operates seemingly legally; the forbidden rune magic is his secret armament)
- When Velyra demanded payment, Morvaeth saw the chance to get rid of Ammetharion WITHOUT being involved himself and without drawing other elves in → the commission. Two parallel motives since the murder:
- Morvaeth: Hatred/guilt deflection (the daughters as Ammetharion's legacy + living reproach of his guilt)
- Velyra: Blood potion, self-perpetuating (hunts the daughters of her own accord, not as a puppet)
- An alliance of convenience between two forms of greed.
Althaea's Letter (in Morvaeth's Possession)
Before setting out, Althaea wrote one last letter to Ammetharion. Contents: her motives (protection) + the announcement of her pregnancy with the longed-for son. The servant she handed it to was on Morvaeth's list — the letter never reached Ammetharion.
- Why Morvaeth keeps it: Relic of his obsession + daily proof of his own guilt/defeat. He can neither destroy it (all that remained of her) nor let it go.
- Why it is dangerous: Contains two devastating truths — (1) Althaea died for Ammetharion out of love; (2) she was carrying his son. Together it fully exonerates Ammetharion and convicts Morvaeth as the holder of the intercepted document.
The Gravesite — Morvaeth's Relationship to It
Morvaeth has avoided the stone circle beside Elen-Garth since Althaea's death. Knows nothing of the permanent storm phenomenon (he was never there). His absence — 300 years without visiting the grave once — is itself silent proof of his guilt: he cannot face the place of the woman he loved and unintentionally killed.
He knows about the son (letter in his possession), but not that the storm is the consequence of the lost element. The two halves of the truth are kept apart by his absence — and by the letter he will not let go.
Relationship with the Elf MC (Vaelan)
- The Council Chairman (Althaea's father) WANTED the investigation of the guards → overruled Morvaeth (who was against it).
- Morvaeth could not prevent the commission → hijacked it: never gave the elf MC the assignment in full detail, but slightly altered and aimed at Ammetharion. The elf MC is an unwitting tool, set on the wrong target.
- Knows the elf MC personally (as his commissioner) → makes the private conversation with Ammetharion and the full disclosure a direct blow against Morvaeth's plan.
The Council Chairman (Althaea's Father — Grandfather of the Sisters)
- Knows NOTHING of the betrayal. After more than 1000 years, not entirely convinced that Ammetharion is to blame (a residue of doubt lives on).
- But: grief over his dead daughter → anger that clouds his judgment → to Ammetharion's disadvantage, subtly fed and steered by Morvaeth.
- Third unwitting instrument (alongside the elf MC/manipulated commission + Ammetharion/implanted self-reproach).
- Symmetry: Three men who loved Althaea (father, husband, investigator MC) — all manipulated by the one who wanted to possess her.
- Finale Hook: The residual doubt is the lever. At the reveal, the Chairman could turn against his deputy, rehabilitate Ammetharion, open the cage.
Reveal Dramaturgy (Staircase)
- Early (Act 1): Ammetharion palpably stripped of political power (the cage) — no reason given.
- Middle (Act 2): The elf MC hits on inconsistencies: his assignment makes no sense, is oddly aimed at Ammetharion; traces of the lackeys.
- Late (shortly before the finale): A detail links the “fled” guards to an order from above / the covered-up murder (not mere cowardice).
- Finale (Final Battle): Velyra fights — at the decisive moment Morvaeth intervenes with Nyxareth. The full truth breaks.
- Small, fine flashes scattered throughout, the big bomb in the finale.
Finale Mechanics
Double victory condition:
- The sisters defeat Nyxareth (shadow dragon)
- The MC + his bonded partner defeat Morvaeth himself
- Both must fall simultaneously (the bond's weakness) — the same method Morvaeth used against Althaea + Eldrinath, turned against him. Poetic justice. Justifies why the whole family + MC are needed; grounds the possible father-sacrifice endings (Mirianwe Golden A/B).
Posthumous Rehabilitation of the Elven Guards
The elf racial guilt (“the warriors fled in cowardice”) is factually false — they did not flee — they actually rode off on Morvaeth's orders (true fact), were afterwards eliminated as witnesses and their bodies placed far away; from this the rumor of flight arose. In reality it exists only as believed guilt (the elf MC believes it → confesses it in mechanically correct fashion), but the finale reveal dissolves it and rehabilitates the guards posthumously.
